Are you planning to apply for a research grant of more than €10.000? We recommend you first submit a pre-proposal. We advise you to use a maximum of 500 words for the summary. Our staff will assess the pre-proposal on the likelihood of funding. Do we consider that chance to be realistic? If so, you will receive an invitation to submit a full proposal. If not, we advise you not to submit an application. Since this is an advice and not a formal decision, applicants can still submit a full proposal despite a negative advice.

Application guidelines

Applications that do not meet the requirements will not be accepted. In addition, Erasmus Trustfonds has a number of preferences. Projects that meet these preferences are more likely to receive funding.

 Who can submit an application?
  • The applicant is an academic staff member of Erasmus University Rotterdam
Requirements:
  • The application is endorsed by a full professor and the head of the department or faculty dean
  • Partial funding of at least 50% is required from other sources, such as Erasmus University Rotterdam, its faculties and/or third parties
  • The application is submitted before the application round deadline. You can find all deadlines here
  • The project for which funding is requested starts no earlier than six weeks after the deadline
Preferences:
  • Erasmus Trustfonds specifically aims to support those research projects that are embedded in one of the Erasmus Initiatives or the programs of the convergence between Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus MC and TU Delft and projects with societal impact. A letter of endorsement from the academic director in which the project is embedded, or from he representatvie of the involved societal partner is therefore of great value.
  • Projects where a contribution of the Erasmus Trustfonds can function as an accelerator to attract other third party funds are preferred. Please indicate at which organisation you are applying for funds as well, what amount you have requested and in which program/call for applications.

Procedure

Applications are carefully processed and all personal and research information provided will be handled confidentially.

During the decision procedure, applications are assessed based on the formal eligibility criteria and based on substantive assessment criteria. The assessment criteria, amongst others, take into account:

  • To what extent the application contributes to the core aims of the Erasmus Trustfonds and/or the named funds
  • The expected quality of the proposed project
  • The expected societal impact of the proposed project
  • To what extent the application involves Erasmus University Rotterdam
  • The quality of the application
  • Whether the activities can proceed without the support of the Erasmus Trustfonds.

Grants are awarded based on priority of the application and available budget.

Applications of €10.000,- and more are decided upon by the Erasmus Trustfonds board and/or a disbursement committee. The disbursement committee might consult independent experts for a peer-review. Based on the outcome of the peer-reviews, the disbursement committee advises the board. The decision procedure for these applications typically takes three months

During the decision procedure, we might contact you for further information.

After a decision has been made

After we have reviewed the application, a notification of the decision will be sent to you by e-mail.

If support is granted, the grant letter states the amount granted and the requirements/conditions under which the grant is made. We might, for example, require a report of the project.

In the grant letter you are requested to submit a financial and substantive account. Please find a template for this report here.
