Hieu Tran wants to improve Vietnamese maritime law

In his home country, Vietnam, Hieu Tran did not have the opportunity to become an expert in maritime law. Thanks to a talent scholarship, he is now completing the Maritime & Transport Law Master’s degree in Rotterdam.

“Maritime law was only an elective at Hanoi Law University”, Hieu Tran says. Despite its 3000-kilometre-long coastline, there is little attention in Vietnam for maritime law. “It’s a very interesting field, and I hope that I can contribute to its future in my home country.” “The Erasmus University Rotterdam made sense”, he says. “Rotterdam is the maritime heart of Europe. The city has the international experience I was looking for. While studying Maritime & Transport Law, we learned about maritime jurisdiction and visited companies that work in the industry, such as the prestigious Royal IHC. I’m also very honoured to be selected as a team member for our university at the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot in Sydney. All this is made possible by the Erasmus Trustfonds talent scholarship. I feel at home in Rotterdam,” he says, adding: “although I miss the Vietnamese climate.”

Vietnamese ambitions

“After graduating, I want to expand my network and experiences in Europe. Later, I want to work in maritime law in Vietnam. I hope to work on the update of the Vietnam Maritime Code, which is outdated and not very practical. In Rotterdam, I’ve learned a lot which I hope to bring into practice in Vietnam.”
