Annelien Bredenoord recognizes the significance of the university in today’s society

Annelien Bredenoord, President of Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Executive Board, recognizes the role of the university in society. Gifts by donors enable the university to fulfil that role. Bredenoord: “As rector magnificus, I’m happy that alumni and others who care about the university choose to support us. This makes it possible for our researchers and students to have a positive and durable impact on our society.”

The collaboration between the Erasmus Trustfonds and the university has existed for 110 years. Bredenoord: “We are proud that this lasting partnership has been around since 1913, when the Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool was founded. Who would have expected that this would lead to today’s university, with seven faculties, two scientific institutes, and the Erasmus University College?”

Over the past century, the university has become a leading institution. More and more frequently, society appeals to scientific knowledge. Bredenoord: “We need science to find answers to today’s complex questions, including climate change, polarization, digitalization, technological developments, and social inequality. Finding solutions for the major challenges of our time, together with governmental and non-profit organizations as well as businesses: this is the strength of researchers at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Erasmus MC.”

Support is necessary

But the university cannot do this on its own, and financial support is a dire necessity: “Thanks to gifts and legacies to the Erasmus Trustfonds, the Erasmus University Rotterdam can live up to its reputation as top-tier university and fulfil its ambitions regarding research impact and education quality. With the extra flow of money, we enable the university to unite its efforts to reach new insights and solutions for important societal challenges, whether at home or across the globe. It’s wonderful that testators can contribute to our mission by including us in their wills. The Erasmus Trustfonds helps researchers excel in their fields and supports students in their ambitions.”
